EVM Kitchen garden renewalAs the years have passed by, we have noticed that each year, an action in the form of an initiative or something else is left behind by the Year 11’s as their legacy before graduating. This year the 11thgrade batch of 2018-19 has come forward with the initiative to renew the EVM kitchen garden. They publicly announced this during the break time on the 25thof September.

THE ANNOUNCEMENT
The public announcement event was well organized. The students crowded around the performance area while the 11th graders were getting ready. Nathan from Year 9 played what seemed to be a drum stool as he sat on it and drummed it. Following these drum beats were beats from the audience- Two students who possessed the talents of beat boxing voiced it into the mic to keep the audience entertained. One by one the 11th grader- Rhema, Kristen and Thiyara shared their idea with us and gave a brief note on what they were going to do. Amongst the whole event, the most eye catching, and most entertaining thing was the announcement that Adnan- the leaf, was to going to be made the mascot of this project!
HOW IT ALL BEGAN?
At the end of the academic year 2017-18, the current Year 11 came up with this idea. At first many were hesitant taking into consideration their Boards, and since they are the first batch that’s going to be attending the new specification exams we could clearly make out why they were so reluctant; however, they went forward with the idea and were constantly encouraged by Mrs. Amatul Noor, head of the Science Department and Mr. Herald.
THE PROGRESSThis project is the legacy which will be left behind by the 11th graders and a token of appreciation towards the school. This is a hands-on project. The students will be doing the planting and taking care of the garden. Students from Year 7-11 are welcome to participate and assist with the planting and maintenance of the garden. For anything else, we'll just have to wait and see. The core team is at the center of all of this. Taking input from Mrs. Noor and Mr. Herald, they decide what is planted and grown and who tends to look after the garden daily. Students from Year 11 and Year 10 EVM class as well as the Student Council Environmental Directors will assist in the maintenance of this garden. Any students who are interested in helping with the planting and maintenance of this garden can come and meet the core team consisting of Kristen, Thiyara and Rhema.
